The process uses an air brush rather than traditional painterly styles and I use a variety of
precious metals in the lamination process. The actual painting and drawing takes place
on the backside of the acrylic sheet, so I have added the challenge of backward
painting and reverse image drawing.
ACRYLURS is a two dimensional image created on the surface of sheets of crystal clear
acrylic with layered airbrush acrylic paint and laminated gold and silver leafing in
reverse side painting. Acrylic surface, unlike glass, gives a stunning brilliance to the
paint.
(ACRYLURS: noun; a reversed image drawing is completed on the masking paper which
protects the acrylic sheet. The lines of the drawing are cut with a razor. One section at a
ti me, acrylic is exposed and painted with liquid acrylic. The finest shadows and details
are painted first, then continue to the background or gold leaf primer. At completion of
painting, the acrylic sheet is turned over and the remaining protective sheet is removed,
revealing the finished work of art through the crystal clear acrylic.)
The longevity of these pieces have been tested in a number of conditions (some of
them accidental). I use only the very finest crystal clear acrylic. The surface of the new
generation acrylic is abrasion resistant. This is ideal for art that is built to last. The paint
used is acrylic paint, which has a coat of clear plastic applied for final protection. This
is important for nautical uses of ACRYLURS. Humidity or direct contact with water will not
harm these pieces, and while no paint claims to be totally fade proof, using acrylic that
has built in protection from the sun's ultra violet rays will lengthen the lifespan of any
paint. The handling and life expectancy of these works require minimal care and will
outlive any other painted art in the world.
